Dr. Mark Hyman introduces a new paradigm in medicine

Functional medicine can be thought of as the “Slow Medicine.”  It is an investigative, comprehensive approach that focuses on uncovering the root causes for chronic diseases and correcting those deficiencies or dysfunctions to restore balance and health. It is a science-based field of integrative health care with a strong focus on how lifestyle factors and digestive health relate to overall health.

Guiding principles of functional medicine:

  • An Integrative, Science-Based Approach

Looking “upstream” to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that lead to health or illness–incorporating mind, body, and spirit elements– and using this information to practice primary prevention when possible.

  • A Patient-Centered Focus

Emphasizing the whole person rather than the disease or disparate symptoms; creating a personalized “map” of one’s health journey

  • Individual Genetic Variability Recognition

Considering the unique genetic makeup of each patient, along with both internal (mind, body, and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning.

  • Integration of Best Medical Practices

Weaving together traditional Western medical practices with alternative medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, exercise, and stress management; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, or mind-body techniques.

  • Health as a Positive Vitality

Aiming to help people feel energetic and vibrant, not merely focusing on the absence of disease.
