My memoir is not a prescriptive doctor’s manual, but an experiential odyssey through a decade of illness
I am writing a memoir about a mystery: the mystery of my own patient case and what my autoimmune disease taught me about love, sex, and health.
This is not a prescriptive doctor’s manual, but an experiential odyssey through a decade of illness that starts with postpartum thyroiditis, then Hashimoto’s disease, and culminates in chronic fatigue. My narrative illuminates the chasm between the clinical definition of disease and the human experience of illness. I explore the existential angst around uncertainty, something the paradigm of western medicine doesn’t address well. I also describe how my journey as a patient informs me to practice medicine in a very different way.
